Pura Vida, Costa Rica: Adventure, Relaxation, and Everything In Between
Are you searching for adventure? Craving a little relaxation? Dreaming of beautiful beaches or dramatic mountains? Look no farther—Costa Rica truly has it all.
Adventure at Every Turn
Costa Rica is a playground for thrill-seekers. White-water rafting, ziplining through jungle canopies, hiking volcanoes, soaking in natural mud baths, horseback riding, and ATV tours—this country invites you to explore. And yes, there are monkeys!

One of our most unforgettable adventures was white-water rafting through the Costa Rican mountains. Class III and IV rapids kept us paddling hard as icy, crystal-clear mountain water rushed past us. Our guide, Chewy, knew every rapid by name and navigated us safely—even through the notorious 12-foot drop known as “The Terminator.” Half our group took an unplanned swim, but Chewy’s skill kept us on course.
Of course, no adventure comes without surprises. A tiny Class I ripple tossed my daughter and me right out of the raft just 100 feet from the finish line. Sore backsides aside, we laughed the whole way—it was one of the best adventures our family has ever shared.
Slow Down and Savor
Not every day has to be action-packed. For a slower pace, take a water taxi to Coco Beach, sail a catamaran at sunset, or plan a day trip to nearby Nicaragua.
Costa Rica’s beaches are also a delight. Don’t expect powdery white sand; instead, you’ll find soft brown shores streaked with black volcanic ash, giving them a unique beauty of their own. The sand stays gentle underfoot, the waters are crystal clear, and here’s the best part—no seaweed. Just soft sand stretching out as far as you can wade.

And for a taste of Costa Rica’s flavors, don’t miss a coffee and chocolate tour. You’ll enjoy breakfast, sample freshly roasted beans, and indulge in handmade chocolate that’s worth every calorie.
Living the Pura Vida
So, what exactly does Pura Vida mean? In Costa Rica, it’s more than just words—it’s a way of life. Used as a greeting, a farewell, or simply an expression of joy, it embodies the country’s relaxed, positive spirit. Whether you’re ordering a cold drink, strolling to the beach, or reflecting on a great day, Pura Vida says it all.
Practical Travel Tips
Costa Rica’s location near the equator means the sun can be intense. Sunscreen is essential, but if you’d prefer an SPF shirt, don’t worry—you can find one right on the beach. Look for Alejandro’s shop; he’ll make sure you’re covered.
Where we Stayed
For families, the RIU Palace Costa Rica is an excellent choice. With multiple pools, daily games, and entertainment, there’s always something happening. The food is plentiful, the service warm, and the views breathtaking.
Don’t miss the on-site water park. The slides are fast and fun, but the Torbellino is the star—whirling you around before dropping you like a giant flush. We rode it again and again until we were too sore to continue, laughing the whole way.
